Vibrant Vibes at the Boeremark

My Local is Lekker is found every Saturday morning at the Pretoria Boeremark, a vibrant open-air farmers’ market in Silverton. Arriving in the crisp morning air, I step into a space alive with vibrant colour, energy, and the familiar hum of community and conversation. Here, away from malls and imported goods, I rediscover my roots in the authenticity of farm-fresh produce, crafted wares, music, Boeretroos and yummy treats. Visiting the vendors, seeing their creative offerings, and embracing the fresh vitality of new entrepreneurs is impactful.

The Protea stall, which takes centre stage in this textural acrylic painting, holds personal significance. My husband of 37 years has long since stopped questioning my weekly ritual of choosing a fresh bunch of Proteas. I often add the King Protea, South Africa’s national flower, celebrated for its striking beauty and quiet strength. To me, all Proteas represent resilience, a proud spirit, and the unique vibrancy of our land.

The Boermark is more than a place of trade; it is a gathering of family, friends, young and old, bakers, cooks, artisans, farmers, and dreamers. It is where local culture, creativity, and connection thrive. Each stall, each voice, each intoxicating aroma, each familiar smile testifies to the richness of our collective lifestyle. In this, I see the truth of Ecclesiastes 3:13: “And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labour, for these are the gifts of God.” (NLT).

Through Vibrant Vibes at the Boeremark, I celebrate the identity of my community, the joy of belonging, and the soul of Pretoria. This is my tribe. This is my home. This is my lekker!
