This mixed media work blends symbolism, realism & surrealism to scream out the harsh truth about gender-based violence (GBV). The dark maroon backdrop sets a heavy, intense mood that swallows the scene, hinting at the suffocating environment of abuse. The girl’s face, rendered in realistic detail, is gagged with a rope crossing her mouth, showing how women are forced into silence – their voices stolen by oppression. Above her head, the red love heart symbolises how misplaced or twisted notions of “love” are used to trap and control them, chaining them into submission. The vibrant, swirling contour lines that flow from her chest into the background represent the chaotic, colourful layers of emotion and resilience that lie beneath the surface of that silence, hinting at the inner strength and the multi coloured struggle for freedom. Together, the artwork urges viewers to recognise the dangerous link between false love and enforced muteness in GBV, calling for the breaking of those chains and the unleashing of women’s voices.
