Precious Memories

This work is rooted in memory, inheritance, and the quiet persistence of what remains after loss.

“I drew inspiration from a story my grandmother once wrote about her childhood — a moment of grief when a beloved tree and a Hamerkop’s nest were washed away by a flood. In comforting her, her father told her that nothing ever truly disappears; even when it is no longer visible, it continues to live within us”.

This idea has shaped both my understanding of memory and my approach to artmaking. I explore how moments from the past — particularly those tied to childhood, place, and belonging — linger in the present. Through visual language influenced by Fauvism’s emotive use of colour and the intimate portrayal of childhood seen in Mary Cassatt’s figures, I sought to create a space where memory feels alive and enduring.
